IE6 and the disappearing status bar

Posted by: Jennifer In: Bookmarks

I've been having a problem with IE6 where, even though I set it to show the status bar – if a site spawns a new window on me – suddenly it changes the setting on me – without my doing anything! Looking around through google, I think (hope!!) I came across a solution that will fix this once and for all!

From this site:

With (only one) IE open, click View and select: Status Bar.
Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right).
Open Windows Explorer, click View and select: Status Bar
Click Tools > Folder Options > View tab
Click the "Apply to all folders" button.

I hope that works for you, because it was still just a temporary fix for me. I ended up having to go to alternative browser to resolve it (Slimbrowser, which uses the IE engine).

First follow the previous instructions for displaying the status bar.
Click Start | Run and type regedit to open the registry editor.
Navigate to:
HKEY Current User\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main.
Select Show_StatusBar
Click the Edit menu and click Permissions.
Click Advanced
One at a time, highlight each name in the list and click the Edit button.
For each, check Deny on the Set value row and click OK. Do this for each name, including Administrators and System.
Close the registry editor.
Now nothing can ever get rid of your IE status bar again.

Keep in mind, this also locks things like changing the setting for your homepage (when you click the little house) and displaying animations on pages – so be sure you have everything in IE set up how you want first!
