Kung-Tunes

Posted by: Jennifer In: Bookmarks

(I'll probably add more to this post later)
Went looking for a "now playing" like people have for winamp – except I wanted it for iTunes (yes, the jury is out – I love iTunes (for windows). Buymusic and Napster can kiss my butt! LOL!)

In any case – Kung-tunes
(still not sure if this is what I'm looking for… I'll update later.)
(Grr… Kung-tunes is for Mac – someone mentioned jTunes – but I can't seem to find the right one)

I googled "jtunes" and found the author's blog (I wasn't the only one, it seems!). He kindly directed me to the sourceforge page for the program (called blogtunes now).

Anyway, I installed it and it works like a charm :) There's not much documentation on usage, but you can set it up the same way as the "Hoverable Playlist" tutorial on virtualvenus.org :)

Well, I am trying it, but I don't know if I like it. It sends a trackback ping to your server. See here: http://www.koldark.net/archives/2004/Jan/19/see_what_i_am_listening_to.html. You will have to select the trackback link. I am sure something can be done with it, but as it stands, I don't like it very well.

Weird… I never implemented the Winamp "listening to" stuff – How is this different? (I still haven't gotten to it yet – but I was going to try and use those instructions and apply them (as best as possible) to this…)

It's really not very different from the Winamp version, except I think the format that the trackback ping comes in is a little different. I use MTMacros to parse the info from it and display it in a bit nicer fashion :)

As directed on virtualvenus.org, I set up a new blog, a category called "Incoming", and set the ping url in the BlogTunes config file to the trackback url of that category. Just my template looks different:

<MTMacroDefine name="nowplaying" pattern="m/^(.+?) played at .+? by (.+?) from the album, (.+?)$/i">
<MTAmazon method="Keyword" search="[MTMacroMatch position='2'] [MTMacroMatch position='3']" line="music" lastn="1">
<img src="<MTAmazonSmallImage>" alt="CD Cover" align="right" border="0" hspace="4" vspace="0" /><strong>Listening:</strong> <MTMacroMatch position='1'> (from <a href="<MTAmazonLink>"><MTAmazonTitle></a> by <MTAmazonArtist>) </MTAmazon>
</MTMacroDefine>
<MTPings category="Incoming" lastn="1">
<$MTPingExcerpt convert_breaks="0" apply_macros="1"$>
</MTPings>

This is a rather simplicistic version, not "hoverable" and it doesn't display anything if the album isn't found on Amazon (going to change that later). But the concept works. I'm including the result via PHP in my main blog, you can see it in the right sidebar.

I didn't have added to my blog but I'm trying Audioscrobbler.com

A plugin (for xmms, winamp, itunes, windows media player, etc) submit what you are listening to the site. This information is presented in a user page such as mine
http://www.audioscrobbler.com/user/paolomassa/
and the last 10 tracks are exported also on XML
http://www.audioscrobbler.com/rss/history.php?username=paolomassa
(see http://wiki.audioscrobbler.com/index.php/Web%26RSS_Data).
The XML info can of course displayed on your site as you prefer.
I think they will export more information and statistics in future.

All the data are released under a Creative Commons license and are hence usefule for research too.
