Photo album (gallery) scripts…

Posted by: Jennifer In: Bookmarks

Now I'm doing scripts for my parents! LOL! My mother needed a script to display her paintings on a web page. There's not a ton, and she's not technically inclined. Ideally, it would be great if the script created thumbnails on the fly so she can just upload and be done.

So rather than write one (since I don't know how to write one that would do thumbnails), I'm looking for what's out there.

Webmaint
Gallery
Simple gallery script (sgs)

Got any others? A review perhaps? How easy are these (or ones you suggest) to use? We're going for beginner level internet user.

I've used Gallery with great results. It's pretty customizable, and I believe there are going to be templates avaiable in the future. I'd recommend it!

I use Gallery as well. Once it is installed I find it to be very user friendly even for a novice.

I like Slooze myself. Its interface is clean and it's easy to manage.

I have used Gallery for awhile. Its simple to customize, even if its not templated, and easy to install.

Can't wait for 2.0

If your mother would like to try out Gallery, she can sign up for an account at http://www.scrapblog.com/ And as the webmaster, that's me, for her own album.

I'm setting up Gallery at Reel Identities and I've found an easy way to customise gallery.

I created a new template using the POST-generated MT header, using the save-to-filename of /path/to/gallery/html_wrap/album.header and /path/to/gallery/html_wrap/album.footer (respectively)

Then I saved each. THen I had to go back and save it as /path/to/gallery/html_wrap/album.footer and /path/to/gallery/html_wrap/gallery.footer

Gallery automatically uses these templates to wrap around the galleries.

I had to View Source on my home page and copy the header and footer from there, since otherwise I got a lot of MT template tags in the files. (Is there a way to have MT replace the tags before saving to file?

Either way, I think it came ok pretty seamless. I'm trying to figure out why the individual picture doesn't keep the header/footer though.

I'm sorry, the link to my gallery is here. I wont have it public until I figure out how to get the individual pictures to have the header/footer.

Wow, Im retarded. You can atually just use wrapper.footer and wrapper.header to wrap around every page.

Cool.

Please delete my other comments, if you want. I'm putting all the information in this one. I figured out a lot since my original comment.

I'm setting up Gallery at Reel Identities and I've found an easy way to customise gallery.

First of all, I use Header and Footer modules for my site. When I set up Gallery I created new Index Templates using the code from my header/footer modules, using the output-filename of /path/to/gallery/html_wrap/wrapper.header and /path/to/gallery/html_wrap/wrapper.footer (respectively)

Gallery automatically uses these files to wrap around the gallery pages.

I think it came out pretty seamless. The tables are a hair too wide, but it's only bothersome when editing captions as admin – but no one else has to see that. :)

Here's the link to my gallery.

This is the link to a Great Tutorial on Customising Gallery.

Siteframe automatically creates thumbnails in various sizes. See http://siteframe.org.

I really like 4images (www.4homepages.de) gallery. I really like it but I think Gallery would be better for the type of gallery you want. :)

I just use Moveable Type to do my gallery… I just put the image location as the body, and the description as the continued text (or whatever it's called…) It's pretty easy… you just do <img src="<$MTEntryBody$>"> or something.

If you go to the tutorial section of my site (eclecticpixels.com) you'll find a tutorial on how to use Gallery's html_wrapper files to wrap your gallery in your own layout (in other words, if you want to add a right, left or right and left sidebar(s) my tutorial explains how).

Gallery is pretty customizable, especially if you understand how tables fit together and know a little php. The people who have run into problems didn't understand tables at all (I know because I've helped probably 30 people or more via email) and were randomly inserting bits of code all over and not looking at how all the pieces fit together.

My favorite is the first one that pops up on Google searching for 'album'. http://marginalhacks.com/Hacks/album/

Easy to setup and easy to maintain. Here's my kitty family album – http://www.gaiser.org/Cat_Family/

I don't like to gripe about free script offerings that much… But (you knew there had to be one) After another several day search to find a decent gallery script I have come up with nothing. All of them have problems, none of them are as easy as ANY cms to use. What are a few things a decent Gallery script should have?
Unlimited Categories and Sub-Categories
Templates/Easily wrapped
On the fly thumb generation.
Somewhat directory based, i.e. it would see existing directorys and be able to setup gallerys from there.

Somebody over on "Gallery"'s website said that it was easy to install and only took a couple of hours. Only! Hours! what kind of script takes a couple of hours to install? In my opinion "Gallery" has got to be one of the most cluster****ed scripts I have ever come across next to anything based off of phpnuke. Coppermine has alot of problems too. e107 being my cms of choice, I've installed several versions of coppermine, and was aggravated with all of them. (Jalist the author of e107 likes coppermine.) I did have this script that was pretty much all I wanted, it's shortcomings were ones I could deal with, But alas I have since forgotten which particular script it was. To not be entirely negative, Zoph looks clean and well done. Too bad it's not what I'm looking for.

I've been really happy with Gallery. That's what I used when I slapped my Boston photos online, and I'll be using it again tonight for SXSW photos. If you need help tweaking it, Matt of PhotoMatt.net has helped with the development of it and can help do anything you want with it. Well, probably almost anything…

I've been using Gallery for quite a while and have been pleased overall. I've also installed it for several other people and they all like it. It CAN be a pain to install, depending on how your hosts servers are configured and what modules are present or not. I've installed it in as little as 30 minutes, but sometimes it can take a day if things dont go right. It's also not as easy to customize as it COULD be, but still fairly easy if you know HTML (especially tables) and some basic CSS.

I hear Gallery2, due out this summer is going to rock. I cant wait.

I think there's some great feedback here – so I wasn't going to stop it by saying which one I went with – but I won't hold you in suspense any longer… (yeah, I'm sure it's keeping you up at night. NOT! LOL!)

In any case, I decided to go with Gallery. Took me all of 10mins (?) or less to install. left it with mostly default stuff. She *adores* it and will probably donate some cash to them. Not going to bother customizing it at the moment… she just wanted a way to show friends/family paintings she was doing – doesn't really care about the "design" of the page itself. At some point if I ever get bored (HA!) maybe I'll try and customize it a bit for her – but it works great "out of the box".

I've used Gallery for my personal sites for a while now and love it. Last I had to create a gallery on another site, and I tried out Coppermine's photo gallery script. It's also awesome. A little easier to install than Gallery, and a bit more flexible. Worth checking into. It has some really cool features, although everyone may not need them.

Well, this comment is rather late, but I personally like a program called JAlbum, which generates photoalbum pages that are quite lovely (sample at:

http://www.datadosen.se/jalbum/samples/Bluepro/index.html

It's a Java-based client-based program that essentially creates a bunch of PHP files in, say, a Windows 2000 environ and then uploads them to the server. Although this is fairly tedious and doesn't allow one to upload images from any computer, the generated pages are easily customized and (at least to me) look better than any other freeware program currently available (i.e. Gallery & Coppermine) — Also, personally, I touch up my images in Photoshop and Fireworks before uploading (just to get file sizes down), so I'm really not affected by the lack of server-side capability. (More skins can be seen at:

See what I've done? The side bars (just left for now) are collapsable, and not in the stupid way that the blogrolling is collapsable… It actually doesn't transmit the data if it doesn't need to, meaning an even quicker download…
