Call for links…

Posted by: Jennifer In: Bookmarks

Now that hotmail no longer lets you pop your mail… and I'm sure Yahoo will soon follow… I need to find a web app that *I* can install on my server that will let me grab my mail.

Blogomania actually DOES come with a webmail program, but I believe the ports I have to access that webmail app are being blocked by my work. (And actually that's been the case with the last THREE companies I've been at for this type of webmail arrangement).

I installed NOCC-Webmail, and while I can READ my mail, it won't let me send mail. It's also a bare bones program. Ideally I'd like maybe just a FEW more features. (although, beggers can't be choosers… but being able to SEND mail is a must!)

I've heard of Squirrel mail, and I tried to install it, but I couldn't figure it out. The instructions weren't dumbed down enough for me. :-B

So… anyone have some suggestions? Webmail apps? anyone? Bueller?

I don't know if you know much about unix, but you could always trying SSHing to your account and using pine on the server. I'm assuming they have it installed – most hosting accounts allow SSH and have pine installed. Definitely a lot more functional than most webmail interfaces and uses port 22 (for SSH). Failing that, you might go to freshmeat.net and search for "webmail" there to see what results you can come up with :)

I know you want something on your own server, but in the meantime, I use mail2web.com. It allows me to check my mail/read my mail and send new messages.

You guys all rock! 😀
Brian, I will definitely be contacting you regarding squirrel mail. It looks cool, but the instructions scared me. LOL! I'll email you (probably next week) to set up a time we can work on it… perhaps via IM. (maybe afterwards, I'll post better instructions here! LOL!)

In the meantime, I set up a personalized page on mail2web.com. NICE!!! I still want my own… but that service is pretty damn cool!

Thanks everyone! :)

I'd love to have a tutorial up here on installing and configuring squirrel mail. I think I'm pretty savvy as far as installing scripts go and I swear to God I couldn't figure this program out to save the life of me.

Would a IP port remapper help? This one is tiny and free:

Possibly you could remap port 25 to something that is allowed through the firewall.

(Quite possibly I have missunderstood!)

I cannot vouch for the ease of installation for this program, but I know that Jeff and I use IMP — available at http://www.horde.org/imp/. We both adore it — it's invaluable for those of us who seem to be on the road All The Damn Time.

Oh, did I say that out loud? My bad. :)

My guess is that IMP is along the lines of a Ferrari, and you're looking for something more like a Mini — but I hate not recommending it, because we've been really pleased with it.

Jenn –
I have been using Eprompter for a while now, and it would probably suit your needs. It's a Mini-email client. You can check up to 16 accounts, webmail & POP3, and you can send/receive/reply/forward. Check it out here: http://www.eprompter.com

Have you figured out squirrel mail yet? Because I would really appreciate a tutorial on how to install it.

I never bothered with squirrel mail, because mail2web did everything I needed to do… which was just being able to pop my email accounts from a web based application. (Used to be able to do that with Hotmail, but aside from the fact that hotmail stopped allowing that for free… my new job blocks all access to hotmail anyway… isn't that nice) 😉 But mail2web is still accessible and works great!
