How to set up a "subscribe to comments" feature on your blog (MT specific) (part 2)

Posted by: Jennifer In: How to's

Leaving this post here for archival purposes – but the latest version of the script is now in cgi format – find more info here

Ask, and ye shall receive. All the feedback (INCLUDING the request that this be a download!) has been incorporated!!

At this moment –
This script will work with previewing comments.
You can unsubscribe from a comment notification thread via email.
You can click on the link to the post, directly from the comment notification.
And, the code has been broken apart for easier implementation – and zipped up for your downloading pleasure.

Report any bugs to me. (I've done some local testing, but it's now 1am… we know what happens when I stay up this late coding…)

UPDATE: Once again – we've updated the script…er… actually I should say LYNDA updated the script, and an AMAZING job she did. You will not believe how SIMPLE it is to implement this puppy now. See the most recent post about this.

In my scripts, It goes through without erros, but never sends the e-mail to the receipent.

The form that is inside the comment form doesn't write to the files and the Post without comments writes the .inc and .txt file, but never sends the e-mail either.

No errors are produced unless I use the full path to files instead of http path in the first two setup lines.
Help..

In the setup.php it says

In the form tag, search for this line:

action="<$MTCGIPath$>mt-comments.cgi"

And replace it with this:

action="http://divamaggie.com/subscribe/emailtolist.php"

In the Comment Listing Template it acually says

<form method="post" action="<$MTCGIPath$><$MTCommentScript$>" name="comments_form" onsubmit="if (this.bakecookie[0].checked) rememberMe(this)">

When this step is completed what exactly gets changed? Or exactly how should that whole section look when changed? What I'm really getting at is does the <$MTCommentScript$> part of the code remain and if so, exactly how should the section look with the change implemented?

Also, is there a tutorial somewhere for the following script?

"Please wait… your comment is being submitted."

I am looking for the latest version of this script (It looks great!). Part one of this entry refers to this entry for the latest code, but there is no code here. Where can I find the latest and greatest? :-) Thanks.

Sorry, Mark, it really is confusing. One of these days I'll go through the archives and make sure they all have the link below. Go to this post for the downloads:

Thanks! I just installed it. What a slick setup script! I'm stunned — I just don't expect that kind of thing :-) Wow, no debugging….it just worked!

I have setup the script exactly as instructed, but it never sends e-mail to the receipent. Any Ideas ?

There's a "newer" version of this script here. However, it should be noted that I have no idea if it can be integrated into MT 3. I wouldn't recommend using anything but that newer one, though, for MT 2.6+ (and under MT 3)

De-spamming the Notebook
I know some of you have subscribed to comments here and have been subjected to spam as a result of that. I apologize to each of you. I had been running Jay Allen's MT-Blacklist plugin to keep the blog from getting overwhelmed with comment spam…
