Generating an Export File in MT

Posted by: Christine In: MT hacks

Great thread in the MT support forum! It was suggested to make a Index template in MT that generates the file automatically whenever you post. Ben has posted all the code needed to put this in to place – I'll be implementing it this weekend on my blog. All credit goes to the booge.

That is a great idea. And so simple too! :)

Who needs automatic backup now? 😉

Template export is what I'm still dreaming of … copying & pasting all of those over when I moved in early April was a nightmare!

That worked like a charm (once I figured out what Ben was talking about!). Such a good idea to back these things up.

the one thing i noticed was that the posts in the file produced are in the opposite order when compared to the file created by export in the MT menu.

so when importing, i'm guessing they'll link properly based on date created, but the numbering of the posts would be totally different from the original blog (due to the reverse import).

anyone following me? lol!

Hmmm… do they always export in the same order when you use the MT export feature? They have always seemed somewhat random to me – so if & when I link to my old posts (which I don't do very often) I've just gone back & recreated those links.

Then again, I am running 2 huge blogs, 1 large blog, and 3 small blogs from 1 copy of MT! That could be part of why mine always seem to be a jumbled mess!

it has always seemed to me like the export goes in date order from first to last post. i.e. my first post always shows up at the top of the page created and the last post at the bottom of the export page.

when using the above, very cool trick, it's the opposite result. not that this will prevent me from using it just in case. but i'm not sure how this would affect the numbering of the entries for html page creation, ya know? :)

True, Jess – I think you can set the sort_order to descending though, so that should take care of that. (or is it ascending, I always get them confused)

Besides, they're displayed in the blog by display order, so the order of the entry ids wouldn't really matter – you'd lose those anyway.

Yeah- this works fine unless you don't like waiting the extra time it takes to write to the file. I tried this, but the wait time started to get to me. Now, I just rebuild the file periodically. But, if you don't mind the wait, I encourage you to do it.

all set! thanks lynda. ben just told me that on the MT forum.

does the trick.

i like to keep my entries in that order when i import because of links to my posts here and there. otherwise all of my entries end up being numbered totally different.

i haven't noticed any delay in posting/rebuilding so this is a great trick for me!!

Please excuse my denseness this morning, (the coffee hasn't kicked in yet), however is this how it is supposed to look? It doesn't look right to me for some reason. The last time I performed an export all my entries had line breaks, this doesn't. Am I doing something wrong?
