New Subscribe to Comments!!

Posted by: Jennifer In: Bookmarks

Chad has been busily coding away and developed a cgi version of the subscribe to comments feature (originally developed in PHP). His is called "notifier". I plan on installing it here soon – but I have tested it on a "test" blog and it works great!! Installation is pretty easy (similar installation as MT-Blacklist).

I believe he has plans to include a feature that will import existing subscriptions, that'll probably be developed soon. If you have the (old) subscribe to comment script running and you want to change it to use this one – after following the installation instructions you only need to change the "action" attribute in your comments form tag. Change it back to the "default" – which if you're using MT 2.64 – you can just put this in:

action="<$MTCGIPath$><$MTCommentScript$>"

I should also add that Oscar Hills has also developed a similar plugin – but I haven't gotten my hands on it to try it out. :)

Thanks so much guys for answering my cry for help! 😀

(update: Just installed Chad's version here – let me know if you notice anything wacky)

If you know, how does this version address blog spam, if at all?

It doesn't address it directly, but it will work *with* mt-blacklist (unlike the php version)…

So, in short, comments get run through mt-blacklist, and mt's IP ban list, BEFORE any comment notifications get sent out. So now, your "subscribees" won't get spamed with comment spam that's not even showing up on your site.

Additionally – if for some reason either by mistake or maliciously – someone continually subscribes your email address to comments of a particular blog – when you get the comment notification – you have the option to unsubscribe from just that post **OR** (this is the new part) to block all comment notifications from that blog. So if you do the block all – regardless of whether or not the person keeps subscribing you – you will not get the emails (unless you contact the blog owner and ask them to remove the block). This was an important addition considering recent "Spam" legislation that is so broad that can be translated to read that almost any email can be considered spam.

Now here's a silly question that probably should be directed to Chad — is it possible to set up this subscription without the user knowing? This is not for my personal blog, but rather for a MT powered course blog that my students would use. I want the software to remind them when someone adds a comment to a post so they will go back and continue the discussion or answer a question.

Ethical issues aside, can this happen?

You could subscribe people to the post – without their knowing (which is why we put in the ability to "opt-out" of just the post – or any notifications from the blog entirely). This can be accomplished on the post itself with a simple form – or through your "mt-notifier" page…

For those of you keeping your eyes out for it, MT-Notifier now supports the importing of comments from the prior implemention of the ScriptyGoddess Subscribe to Comments. Version 1.2 (dated 12/12/2003) required.

Too bad Chad doesn't make old versions of MT-Notifier available!
I can't find anywhere on his site to download old versions.
Notifier 2.0 is only compatible with spam-friendly MT 3.0 (I use 2.66).

I just went there and saw the link to download the 2.6 friendly version… Scroll down to the second "warning" that says this:
Warning: MT-Notifier version 2.0.1 is not compatible with versions of Movable Type prior to 3.0D. If you want to use MT-Notifier with a version prior to 3.0D, use 1.4.1 instead.
